The origin of Kyou-gen (kyo-woo-gen) was emerged as Noh in the late 1300s in Japan. Kyou-gen is the oldest comedy in the world, performed on the stage, as a theaterical art, today.
Suehirokari (Su-a-hiro-kah-ree) is one of the standard play of Kyo-gen theater. One day young Taro was commanded by his Master to visit a city and buy a Suehirokari, which is a kind of a Japanese folding fan shaped like the sector. The Young Taro with a good spirit kept his word and successfully reached a store in a city, although he realized that he haven't known what Suehirokari is. What's more of his poor knowing, the Young Taro was deceived by the merchant with his art, and brought back an umbrella for the high expence. Safely returning back from his visit to the city, the Young Taro showed the umbrella to his Master, just the same way as the wise merchant did, with singing and dancing like a fool. Again, for his poor knowing, the Young Taro had a good discourse on what he did and made his Master in furious anger. At the end of his lost, the Young Taro with a good spirit, decided to keep singing and dancing with the umbrella. Finally, the Master, who have known his pupil's good spirit at heart, had a good smile with a compassion and even started singing and dancing with the young Taro,
altogether.
